The airline saved 37.820 tonnes of fuel and avoided the emission of 116.809 tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere in 2021
In more than 300 destinations on 5 continents, Turkish Airlines continues to fly towards the future of the planet. During 2021, the airline contributed to the preservation of thousands of trees and prevented hundreds of thousands of liters of water from being contaminated.
With sustainable initiatives that range from cargo operations to in-flight services, the airline has promoted actions for the sustainability of the planet, the most recent being the introduction of sustainable fuel. The first experience took place on the Istanbul-Paris flight on February 2, 2022. Turkish Airlines plans to increase frequencies and destinations that use this fuel. The new fuel is currently used once a week on flights to Paris, Oslo, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, London and Stockholm.
Regarding operations for the sustainability of the planet, the chairman of the Turkish Airlines executive committee, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat said: “Each destination in the 128 countries we fly to has its own uniqueness waiting to be discovered. Protecting the future of these regions, which have unique beauties, with their natural, historical, economic and cultural characteristics, is an important issue for Turkish Airlines. In that sense, we are optimizing all of our operations with sustainable efforts to protect our world for future generations.”
The airline has several initiatives already implemented that contribute to the future and sustainability of the planet. Discover some of them below:
Aircraft maintenance hangar reuses rainwater
As the leading Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) company in the Turkey region, Turkish Technic promises a more environmentally conscious future with the renovation of its facilities. Turkish Technic's C/D Hangar, Turkey's largest aircraft maintenance facility, stores rainwater and turns it into usable water. With this action, the company avoided the waste of 1.471 million liters of water. Furthermore, Turkish Airlines avoided cutting 6.710 trees by recycling 632 tonnes of hazardous waste and secured 39.119 m3 of clean soil by recovering 700 tonnes of hazardous waste.
Electric vehicles at airports travel approximately 38 km every day
Turkish Ground Services (TGS), Turkish Airlines' ground services, has 309 electric vehicles at nine airports located in Istanbul and Anatolia. The use of electric vehicles ranges from pushback vehicles, which transport aircraft, to luggage transport tractors. Collectively, vehicles cover 38 km per day, which corresponds to approximately one revolution around the Earth. Along with other TGS actions, operations aimed at zero waste prevented 2.152 tons of hazardous waste from being disposed of in the environment. only at Istanbul airports.
Aircraft save enough fuel to equal 292 trees planted in a year
The greatest results of Turkish Airlines' actions to ensure environmental sustainability come from fuel economy efforts. By adapting methods for single-engine displacement and optimizing flight routes and centers of gravity during operations planning, the airline saved 37.820 tonnes of fuel and avoided the emission of 116.809 tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere in 2021. These figures are equivalent to the planting of 292 trees or 473 flights between Istanbul and New York with wide-body aircraft.
